A cue is impaired if the joints are damaged with the butt and the shaft not being able to screw completely together to make a straight playing tool. A damaged joint can be due to an accident fall of the butt when taking it out from the case. Thus, have a joint protector for both the butt joint screw and the shaft screw thread to insure against potential damage.
